At the Monterey Market

This picture was a challenge, I shot it in RAW. I downloaded it from the card using Lightroom. I then tried to manipulate it in that program. The result was disasterous. Apparently the RAW image needs to be converted to an editable format before fiddling with it.

I could not figure out what to do in either Photoshop or Lightroom. After staying up until 3 in the morning messing around, I installed the software that came with the camera. Canon provides a RAW viewer. It converted the image to a TIF and the problem was solved. From there Lightroom did just fine.

This is what I was getting before I took the above steps:

The end resuilt is fine MJ and the post production work done to obtain the required detail and definiton of colours is good.
I usually upload from my card to my camera software (Nikon PictureProject, in my case) before exporting as jpeg or tiff file to another program for any further editing if required.

I shoot only raw. I love it. Looks like you're having lots of fun with your new software. email if any questions... might be able to help.

It seems the colors on the bottom image are heavily desaturated (40% or so). It's probably your preset in Lightroom or Camera Raw. The saturation can either be set at the master level (all colors at once - on the first tab) or at the color level (third or fourth tab?), so there's two places you should go check what your preset is.

I have my preset desaturate colors a bit too. Digital camera manufacturers always make sure colors are really saturated at the sensor level (with some sort of filtering system) because it's a marketing argument: apparently, the average consumer is likely to go: "the bluer the sky, the better the camera". So desaturating a bit usually gives you more faithful colors.
